CONTROVERSIAL plans for holiday lodges in a wood near Malvern got the go-ahead this week, to the dismay of local residents.

The Three Counties Agricultural Society originally applied to build 50 lodges and a reception building in Langdale Wood, off Blackmore Park Road, but this was turned down by Malvern Hills District Council in January.

A petition against the first proposal received over 1,200 signatures. Critics argue that plans will destroy the woodland, which is a popular spot for walking.

But the Three Counties Agricultural Society says there is a shortage of accommodation in the area and that the project will help to secure its financial future.

A second application, with the number of lodges reduced to 40 and a smaller reception building, was on the agenda at a meeting on Wednesday.

Robert Lamb, chairman of Hanley Castle Parish Council, said the reduction in size of the plan did not overcome its objections, based on the loss of a a valuable amenity, its weak commercial justification, and noise and traffic issues.

But members of the district council's southern area planning committee voted 11-6 to approve the plan, there were cries of "shame" from local residents attending the meeting.

Speaking after the meeting, Ken Nottage, the society's chief executive, said: "We are delighted that Malvern Hills District Council’s planning committee has approved our application to develop a lodges’ park within Langdale Woods. Our thanks go to all those who were part of this democratic process.

"It is now for the trustees of the Three Counties Agricultural Society to determine the way forward. This project will contribute significantly towards securing the long-term future for the society."

An application was made to have the wood declared an asset of community value, but that was turned down in March.
