PLANS are afoot to restore one of Redditch’s ancient monuments to pristine condition.

The Moons Moat Conservation Group has submitted an application to Historic England to execute a 10-year management plan to restore Moons Moat on Church Hill.

The condition of the site, a former 13th century moated house which was inhabited by the Mohun family, has declined in recent years and is now left with a number of overgrown trees, shrubs and reeds in the moat.

Derek Coombes, acting chair of the group, said: “Historic England have been involved in all stages of the planning, so it is hoped that it will consent for the key work to begin in the spring with initial tree and shrub clearance and replacement of fencing to protect the steep west banks of the Moat.”

The group is also inviting residents to a series of talks and walks on the moat, its history and significance.

A series of special days are planned to encourage families to visit the Moat.

Derek added: "Key to the overall programme is the involvement of community groups, specialist organisations and personnel who, for each element, will act as a lead partner working with us to create the activity, to hone it and subsequently to deliver it.

"We are now seeking active sponsors who in return for their investment in the programmes will see opportunities to involve their staff in volunteering and staff development.”

Redditch Borough Council, the Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service, North Worcestershire Water Service and the Church Hill Big Local, are also supporting the restoration bid.
