SIR – Isabelle Michel suggests (letters, January 15) that if I speak to a cyclist who who rides on pavements I am “bound to find…a caring and responsible person”.

Sadly, however politely I talk to the many cyclists who hammer down the pavements on the Ombersley Road every morning, even though there is an excellent cycle path to the city centre via Gheluvelt Park and the race course, I am much more likely to be met by a torrent of abuse.

The same is true of those who cycle dangerously across the pedestrian crossing in Croft Road contrary to the Highway Code.

Nor is the situation helped by our local police: in the last year for which information is available, the number of cyclists prosecuted for riding on the pavement in the City of Worcester is precisely zero.

No wonder many cyclists appear to be genuinely unaware that riding on pavements is unlawful unless they are designated as shared use.

I am a keen cyclist as well as a motorist and pedestrian. I am all in favour of better cycling provision and for motorists being much more careful of cyclists as they drive.

But all users of our roads and pavements should respect both each other and the law, which the police should do much more to enforce.
