National creativity movement STEAM Co will be popping up in Hay-on-Wye at the weekend, with an inspiring range of creative events and activities at Clifford Primary School.

The weekend's events are inspired by Rocket Boys, a book that a grandfather found in an Oxfam bookshop and gave to his son, saying it was the best book he'd ever read.

The book, by Homer Hickam, had been a New York Times No 1 best seller and a Hollywood movie, October Sky, and tells the story of Homer, growing up in a dead-end coal mining town in America in 1957 who, on seeing the Sputnik and with the encouragement of this mother and a teacher, goes on to defy his father and make rockets with friends. He ended up working for NASA.

The story is now being taken into primary schools around the country by charitable initiative STEAM Co. to inspire children and connect communities

On Saturday evening there will be a screening of Most Likely to Succeed, a multi-award winning education documentary film that looks at how education might change to meet the needs of what is being called the fourth industrial revolution. It features Sir Ken Robinson and follows a group of students through a highly innovative school in California that focuses on creativity and collaboration.

After the film, an invited panel will discuss their reaction to points raised in the film with questions from the audience.

On Sunday - Rocket Kids Day will see talks, real rocket launches and air rocket making, and at midday on Sunday STEAM Co. will deliver their Rocket Kids stage show, telling the rocket boys story, showing how rockets work and talking about inspiring inventors.

Free tickets are available for all activities with a donation requested to help cover costs. Pre-book tickets at steamco.org.uk/scohay
