THREE off-duty Redditch nurses helped save a man's life after he fell and fractured his skull outside a Birmingham pub.

The trio sprang into action after the casualty, in his 60s, fell and lost consciousness outside the Soloman Cutler in Broad Street just after 2.30pm on Saturday, January 14.

David Wright, from Nottingham, who had been watching a football match at the pub, smashed his head whilst leaving the venue to attend the Birmingham City v Nottingham Forest game that evening.

Marie Hulston, Lucy Sullivan and Hannah Joynes, who all work at the Alexandra Hospital, were out for their annual meet up at the time of the incident.

Ward sister Lucy said: "I was running late and Marie and Hannah witnessed the man fall and lose consciousness outside the Soloman Cutler on Broad Street.

"He was a Nottingham Forest football fan out with his friends who were understandably distressed.

"Marie had already started CPR when I arrived. The man, David Wright, had no pulse and wasn't breathing. He was blue."

Marie, who has worked in A&E for seven years, said he had lost circulation. She began resuscitation and managed to get him breathing again, with help from Hannah and Lucy.

The three nurses then put him in the recovery position and stayed with him until the paramedics arrived.

On arrival, the nurses told West Midlands Ambulance Service paramedics that the man had collapse landing face down and had stopped breathing for two minutes.

Paramedics said the patient was fully conscious had swelling with a head laceration.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Anyone who is willing to help another human being in their hour of need deserves credit.

"The fact that the people there were trained nurses is extremely fortunate and meant that he received expert care almost immediately.

"We would like to thank them for their efforts which undoubtedly played a part in the successful outcome.

"We would recommend that everyone learns how to do CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and knows where their nearest defibrillator is for just such occasions."

They added that the patient initially denied neck or back pain but this developed at hospital. He was then taken to Birmingham City Hospital for further assessment.

David and his wife Julie have been in contact with the nurses and he has been discharged from hospital and is recovering from his ordeal at home.
