THE physics department at South Bromsgrove High School has been awarded a £3,000 grant to fund pupils' research into cosmic rays.

The funding, granted by the Royal Society, will go towards the High School Project on Astrophysics Research with Cosmics, which will see a system installed at the school to detect cosmic rays.

The HiSPARC project allows schools and students to partner with universities to investigate rays and how they vary across seasons and changing atmospheric conditions.

A small team of students at South has already been analysing data from other detectors around Europe.

Mr Clark, head of physics at the school, said: "We are absolutely delighted to have secured the grant to allow us to have original scientific investigation taking place at the school, especially into something as inspiring as the mysteries of space."

South pupils will be working with the University of Birmingham and have invited Bromsgrove School and Holy Trinity School in Kidderminster to join in.
