THE crowds turned out to Bromsgrove High Street on Saturday to turn the clocks back and join in the fun of the town’s annual Medieval Street Market.

The market combines with the Court Leet’s fair day, which has operated in the town for over 100 years with stalls lining the High Street, and stallholders dressed in traditional costumes, selling their wares to the public.

Members of the Court Leet processed through the town led by High Bailiff John Wheatley and Bromsgrove School Band, stopping outside the Red Lion pub, where for the first time in the history of the court female senior ale taster Jo Slade conducted the ale tasting ceremony.

The Court then moved on to the Housman statue, where town crier Kevin Ward officially opened the Court, and the Rev Ray Rhan blessed the day before the proclamation of the Charter and Assize, granted by King John in 1199, was read. The traditions also include a ceremonial weighing of bread and sealing of leather, which were all originally in place to ensure the quality of goods sold in the town.
