PHILIP Dunne, MP for Ludlow is encouraging more people to be aware of diabetes.

While most people have heard of diabetes, many remain unaware of the symptoms and ways to manage the condition.

Latest estimates suggest almost 550,000 people in the UK are living with the condition but aren’t yet aware, on top of the 3.5 million people already diagnosed with diabetes.

“Diabetes is one of the most significant health issues in this country, affecting millions of people,” said Philip Dunne.

“But many still remain unaware of how it can affect their lives.

“So I am encouraging people across the Ludlow constituency to learn more about diabetes and, if concerned, to consult their GP about arranging a test. Early diagnosis and management can avoid potential later complications.”

There are two types of diabetes.

Type one can affect very young people including babies and is genetic.

But type two diabetes is related to lifestyle issues such as diet and exercise. It is traditionally associated with people who are middle-aged or elderly but doctors have been seeing more cases amongst the young.

Diabetes can require mediation but, in particular in the case of type two, can be helped with lifestyle changes.
