THE final charitable donation has been made by Kidderminster Carnival, bringing the total raised by the organising committee to more than £70,000.
A cheque for £700 has been presented to Nightstop and Mediation Scheme, which helps young people in crisis and provides emergency accommodation in volunteers’ homes.
The charity received the funding boost in accordance with the carnival’s constitution, which decreed that if dissolved, any money left should go to the last main beneficiary.
The final carnival, held at Brinton Park in 2014, donated £500 to Nightstop and the annual meeting was postponed in the hope that new organisers would take over event when key members of the small committee, which had run it since 1992, retired.
One of those, carnival chairman Colin Hill, aged 74, said he was “very pleased” to see the remaining proceeds go to such a good cause.
Mr Hill, who stepped in to save the carnival when the Round Table was forced to quit organising it due to declining membership, said: “We kept the carnival going for another 23 years and in the process raised £70,700 for a variety of local charities.”
The carnival is being replaced with a Brinton’s Bash led by Quads and Castles boss Dave Griffin on Saturday June 4.
