A CCTV camera is going to be installed on the Great Western Way in Hereford, just weeks after Christian Bagley was murdered.

The camera had been on the cards since 2008 but The GWW project was put together as a single project on June 17 and contractors were contacted for renewed quotes with the intention of progressing immediately.

Just four days later Mr Bagley was stabbed on the pathway beneath Hunderton bridge near the steps up to the Great Western Way, after he had visited his infant daughter on Father's Day.

The 30-year-old spent his last minutes between 10.40pm and 10.50pm knocking on nearby doors and calling for help, before collapsing on a friend's doorstep in Rogers Avenue.

June Griffiths, who lives on Rogers Avenue, started a petition for a CCTV camera following Mr Bagley's death and collected 400 signatures.

She said: "It was so close to where we live. People are frightened, people are scared. They won't let their kids out."

Mrs Griffiths, 65, is now looking for businesses to step forward to fund more CCTV cameras along the Great Western Way and thanked residents for signing the petition.

Hereford City Council agreed to £1,000 revenue cost support and the camera is being installed by Herefordshire Council.

The camera will cost £17,000 to install, using money from developers who have built in the area.

Site meetings that were planned to install the camera had to be postponed due to Mr Bagley’s murder but are now rescheduled for July 9.

The hunt for his killer continues.
