A MURDER investigation has been launched after a man was found seriously injured in a Worcestershire prison.

West Mercia Police has launched an investigation after 25-year-old inmate, John York, was found seriously injured in a cell at HMP Long Lartin in South Littleton near Evesham.

He was pronounced dead by paramedics on Sunday afternoon at around 5pm.

Two men — aged 30 and 46 — have been arrested on suspicion of murder and have been detained awaiting interview at a police station in the West Mercia area.

Detective Inspector Mark Bellamy, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are currently working to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the death of Mr John York and our priority is to ensure those responsible are brought to swift justice.

"I would like to take this opportunity to pass my condolences to the victim's family at what must be a very difficult time."
