A RUN-DOWN plot of land in Evesham will be transformed into a modern apartment block.

The "exciting" project will replace derelict buildings - which are blighted by fly-tipping and overgrown weeds - with a contemporary, affordable housing development of 29 two and one bedroom flats.

Rooftop Housing Group is behind the scheme for the disused garage and warehouse in Brick Kiln Street - and the social housing provider was showered with praise when presenting its planning application to councillors.

Members of Wychavon District Council planning committee unanimously approved the application on Thursday (May 28) and even waxed lyrical about the developer.

Councillor Adrian Darby said: "This looks like a very exciting scheme and once again Rooftop Housing have done us proud.

"Nearly all of the schemes we view with real enthusiasm are carried out by this social housing provider rather than private companies."

Councillor Ken Barclay added: "This is a much-needed affordable housing scheme in an excellent site that is currently run-down.

"It can only enhance the whole area."

Councillor Jo Sandalls was similarly impressed, stating the plot of land is currently a "magnet for fly-tipping" but would provide vital affordable housing for the town.

The development will involve the demolition of the garage and warehouse and the building of 11 two-bedroom and 18 one-bedroom apartments.

All of the units will be provided as affordable housing for social rent and will be managed by Rooftop Housing Group.

The scheme will also include 21 car parking spaces and a cycle store for 29 bicycles.
