A SUPERMARKET chain has revealed plans to build a petrol station outside its Hereford store.

Asda hopes to have a forecourt and retail kiosk at the entrance to its South Wye branch on the Belmont roundabout linking the A49 and A465.

The station would have 12 pumps and the option for customers to pay at either the pump or kiosk.

Motorists would access and exit the petrol station from the existing junction onto the Belmont island.

Three years ago, the same store withdrew plans for what would have been Herefordshire’s first credit card-only petrol station.

The plans, similar to those submitted this week, were met with objection by county councillors Chris Chappell and Bob Preece who feared for traffic on the already-busy junction.

“We are delighted that we have been listened to and that this proposal, which would have caused mayhem on this busy road junction, has been withdrawn by ASDA,” said Cllr Chappell at the time.

Asda, meanwhile, told this paper in 2012 that it still intended to go ahead with the idea, saying the withdrawal was merely to provide more information to Herefordshire Council.
