A COMPASSIONATE Bromsgrove paramedic has been honoured for his part in helping a dementia patient.

Stuart Grennan was one of many West Midlands Ambulance Service workers, volunteers and members of the public to be recognised at a recent ceremony for their help in saving lives.

Stuart received a Chief Officer Commendation from the service for helped out a missing dementia patient.

In the incident, Stuart was called to the scene of a road traffic collision near Droitwich on New Year's Eve.

On arrival he found a 70 year old man whose car had run out of petrol. The man appeared confused and displaying behaviours typical of dementia.

Sensitive questioning resulted in the man explaining he was going to London.

He managed to get his name and address, and it was established - through the help of Devon and Cornwall Police - that the man had been reported as missing. The man was then taken to the Worcestershire Royal Hospital where his family were reunited with him a few hours later.

Chief Executive Anthony Marsh said: β€œIt is right that we take time out of our busy schedules to pause for a moment to reflect on all the great things that our staff, volunteers and colleagues from the other emergency services and our partners do to support the ambulance service in providing a really good service for the public and saving lives.”
