THINGS were really heating up in the kitchens at St Benedict's Catholic High School recently as students spent a day competing for the chance to dish up a real meal in a real pub kitchen as part of the 3F (Future of Food is Fun) challenge.
As part of the scheme, the students have been challenged to design and prepare a menu which follows some of the basic rules for food hygiene and healthy eating.
As the first part of the challenge, 14 and 15-year-olds received lessons in everything from the hospitality industry and budgeting, to healthy eating, food safety and customer care.

They then had to design a healthy three-course meal on a strict budget, competing against each other in teams.
A panel of judges organised by Stratford District Council were on hand to decide which of them had the most potential to go through into the next stage of the challenge. The teams also had to identify items from a basket of different types of food as part of the day.
In the next part of the challenge, the winning menu from the day's activities is due to be served up for a host of local public figures in the real-life kitchen surroundings of the Bell Inn in Welford on May 19.
