Green group signs up 500th member

9:23am Wednesday 9th August 2006

ENVIRONMENTAL group Redditch Freecycle is celebrating after its membership reached 500 only six months after it was formed.

The group is part of the worldwide and rapidly expanding Freecycle Network, whose goal is to keep usable items out of landfill.

The network matches people who have things they want to get rid of with people who can use them and is made up of more than 3,000 individual groups across the globe.

Redditch Freecycle's Andy Griffin said hundreds of items had been re-homed since the group was formed, including furniture, electrical goods, building materials and toys.

"People are often too busy to hold a car boot sale or sell their unwanted items in the small ads, so a lot of good stuff ends up at Crossgates and sent to landfill," he said.

"It takes just a few seconds to post a message on Freecycle and someone will soon collect the item from your door."
