Unusual tumour man joins Relay
A HEADLESS Cross man suffering from an unclassified type of tumour will be one of the participants taking part in this year's Relay For Life.
Stuart Pearson, 30, had a lump behind his ear for as long as he could remember but only sought medical advice after his five-year-old son Nathan knocked it while play fighting.
It was Initially treated as acne but when the lump didn't clear Stuart went for further tests which showed he had a previously unknown cancerous tumour.
"It's not been easy. Every time tests have been done they come back as unclassified.
"In fact my doctors are debating amongst themselves to have their name on it but at the moment they're calling it the Pearson Tumour," he said. "Whatever they learn from me they can use for other people who get this type of cancer but at the moment I'm the only one.
"As far as we know there is no one else in the UK with this.
"Because the doctors don't know exactly what it is they don't know how to treat it so at the moment it's just wait and see."
Since he was first diagnosed in December 2006, Stuart has had several operations, one of which lasted over 13 hours, part of his ear was removed as well as a nerve removed from his face and replaced with one from his arm, and at the moment he has no feeling on one side of his face.
Stuart, who still manages to work part time at Johnson Controls, added: "I'm really looking forward to this year's Relay For Life, particularly the candle of hope ceremony which is very emotional.
"I'll be taking part in a group called Combat Cancer which is made up of family and friends so it should be good fun as well as a good way to raise both money and awareness."
Taking place at a 16-acre site in Astwood Bank on Saturday, June 7 Relay For Life brings together the whole community for 24 hours to celebrate the achievements of cancer survivors.
Those who can't attend the entire event will still get the chance to take part in the candle of hope ceremony, which begins at 9pm.
To dedicate a candle to someone or for more information call 07768 0714498 or visit www.cancerresearchuk.org/relay.
