Knife attack nightmare

12:16pm Wednesday 7th May 2008

A TAXI driver was cut on the cheek while being robbed at knifepoint.

The incident happened at about 10.10pm on Monday, April 21, shortly after the male taxi driver had picked up a man and a woman from outside a phone kiosk in Edgeworth Close. The woman had ordered the taxi from the phone booth, calling herself Jo.

After initially saying they wanted to go to Tesco the driver was redirected to Abberley Close.

When the taxi pulled up outside a house there the man, who had got into the front passenger seat, pulled a balaclava over his face and demanded money while threatening the taxi driver with a knife.

The woman, who was in the back, also threatened the driver with a knife.

The driver was searched and the robbers took his wallet containing £10, bank cards and a Nokia mobile phone.

They also took a Tom Tom satellite navigation system and a money bag containing loose change.

The robbers then left the vehicle, throwing the taxi ignition keys onto the pavement as they made from the scene.

The taxi driver suffered a small cut to his left cheek in the incident but did not require hospital treatment.

The male robber was described as white, aged 20-30, slim, around 6ft tall with a long, thin face. He was wearing gloves and a navy blue, woolly hat which he pulled down over his face and used as a balaclava. He was also wearing a green coat and white trainers.

The woman was also white, aged 20-30, around 5ft tall and wearing dark clothing.

Pc Laura White said: "This was obviously a frightening ordeal for the taxi driver and it is important we trace the offenders as soon as possible. It may be that someone recognises the descriptions or saw them waiting in Edgeworth Close before the taxi arrived there or around Abberley Close after the robbery. I would urge anyone who has any information which could help to get in touch immediately."

Witnesses or anyone with information should call police on 08457 444 888 or ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
