Parking space controversy

A DISABLED woman from Winyates who needs a special mobility vehicle to get around is furious that she is not allowed to have her own disabled parking space outside her home.

Rebecca Lumley, 52, lives in Treville Close and suffers from arthritis, asthma and a bad heart, and because of this can't travel any great distance without her wheelchair or mobility vehicle. She is angry that despite the fact her neighbour has a disabled parking space, appeals for her own to Redditch Council have not proven successful.

"I think it's disgusting," said Mrs Lumley.

"I use my vehicle to go to the doctors and hospital appointments and to do the shopping so it's very important to me.

"I park it wherever I can but if it's far away I have to get my daughter to collect it for me so I can get to it."

A spokesman for Redditch Council said: "All applications for disabled parking bays are individually assessed.

"In this instance there is limited parking in a small area with two bays already marked out.

"Unfortunately, any further disabled bays will be allocated on a priority basis and given to applicants who do not have access to either a garage or off-road parking; in this case the applicant has got access to a garage."
