THE contest in the Central and Holloway wards for the two seats upon the Redditch District Council ended in the defeat of the socialist candidates, especially in the Central ward where the majority in favour of Mr J Guise, who had retired from the council by rotation, was an overwhelming one.

Mr FW Russell did not poll so many votes in the Central ward as he did in the Easemore ward.

Plainly the great majority of the ratepayers in the Central ward do not like the idea of socialism upon the local authority and will not have it.

In the Holloway ward, Mr AC Millward was returned by the substantial majority of 56 and the winner polled four more votes than were recorded for Mr Surman last year.
