A HEADLESS Cross couple escaped with their lives after a quick-thinking neighbour alerted them when a burning electrical cable almost set fire to their home.

When Gordon Wright, of Shelley Close, looked out of his window early on Wednesday he saw flames licking the inside of his opposite neighbour's garage and smoke pouring through the doors.

Lights were flashing in his own home as he quickly ran across the road to alert Betty and Seymour Hawker and lead them to safety.

The mains supply to the Hawker's house was burnt out and sparks had started a fire in their garage.
