A RETIRED bank official will not be able to oppose Mrs ME Vernon, the retiring councillor for the Wythall division who seeks re-election to Worcestershire County Council, because when nominations closed at midday on Tuesday, his nomination papers were declared invalid by Mr Walter E Dudley, the deputy returning officer, as they were not filled up as prescribed by law.

He is Mr John Francis Parker, of 255 Station Road, Wythall.

There will be a contest in the Alvechurch division where a vacancy has been caused by the retirement of Mrs GH Walker (conservative).

The contestants are Mr David John Owen (Labour) of 38 Parsonage Drive, Rednal, a cost clerk, and Mr Hugh Nettleford (Conservative), a retired hardware merchant of the Shrubbery, Alvechurch.
