WITH the withdrawal of Mr Johnson from the St Luke's ward, leaving Mr RH Pretty with a walkover, there will be contests only in two wards, the Central and the Holloway.

In the Central ward, Mr J Guise, who has represented the ward for the past six years, is opposed by Mr FW Russell, who last year was rejected by the rate payers of Easemore ward.

In these district council ward elections we recognise no parties.

All that concerns us is the fitness or otherwise of individual members, or candidates.

In his address, Mr Russell very frankly says that if elected to the council he would "approach all subjects for consideration from the Socialist point of view."

We believe that the announcement will not bring him any favour from the majority of the electors of the Central ward.
