The last obstacle to the proposed widening of the railway bridge in Bromsgrove Road, Redditch appears to now be removed, but we do not consider the arrangement as to the payment of the cost an entirely satisfactory one.

The Midland Railway Company have agreed to carry out the widening of the bridge at an estimated cost of £860, and we hope we shall not be considered ungracious in saying that this is not more than just, as the structure is the company's own property.

We do not think, however, that the county council has met the local authority quite as graciously as it should have done.

The part of the work which has to be undertaken by the district council is estimated to cost about £620.

We are informed that the county council has agreed to contribute one half of this amount, which includes the purchase of the necessary land, on the understanding that the district council accepts all liability for further repair and maintenance.

It is the last named condition that we consider an unfair one.
