Fans abuse
I AM writing to express my disgust at the behaviour of some people, a small minority, who attended the Redditch United v Kettering Town football match on Tuesday, April 22, and the way it was handled by the safety staff and also police officers that were in attendance.
Having travelled 100 miles for this game, we were subjected to abuse beyond that normally found at a football game.
A loyal fan of Kettering Town, who is autistic was reduced to tears having being abused, but somewhat worse was the racist chanting aimed at the Kettering chairman. His religion was abused, and he was racially abused.
We raised the issue with security staff but our concerns were laughed off and when questioned by Kettering fans, claimed not to have heard it. The main culprit was a middle-aged man, who appeared to be the ring-leader of a group of young teens. Surely these are very impressionable people who will grow up thinking this is acceptable behaviour?
All this happened just yards from police officers, who were facing the game rather than the crowd.
This is not the first time such incidents have occurred and something needs to be done before someone reacts badly and even more serious incidents occur.
