Call for drink adverts ban

I HAVE sent a letter to Dawn Primarolo saying I was delighted to read today of proposed moves to ban advertising of cigarettes, and remove them from shop displays, in an endeavour to prevent children's and young people's taking up smoking: such a move has been long delayed.

My letter to her goes on to say: - "Can I beg you to take the same measures, please, as soon as possible, with regard to alcohol?

"Children and young people who take up smoking have years to change their minds.

Children and young people who drink heavily are at risk of encountering violence, quite possibly including not only fists and boots but knives and worse; rape; asphyxiating on their own vomit; falling in front of passing traffic - the list goes on and on, before we ever get as far as damage to liver, kidneys, and stomach, risks of breast or bowel cancer, and many others.

"The dangers, both immediate and long-term, of alcohol far outweigh those of tobacco, against which such sensible moves are being proposed.

"I urge your Department and our Government, in the strongest possible terms, to tackle the problem of alcohol as soon as possible."
