Currency crunch on the market
I DO my best to support local businesses but have to say my experience the previous Saturday morning onRedditch Market left a good deal to be desired.
I wanted to purchase come vacuum cleaner bags and went to pay with a £10 note which was refused by the lady and the man who owned the stall on the basis that it was a Scottish bank note and to quote - "We don't accept them".
I politely explained that these notes are valid currency anywhere within the UK, but they were adamant and refused to accept the note in a less than polite manor.
Having just just returned from Scotland on business all I had were Scottish bank notes and so had to leave empty handed.
Help was at hand in the guise of the market superviser, Darren Hawkins who confirmed the stallholders were in the wrong and that they should accept the note.
He kindly offered to change the note so I could make my purchase but by this time I though I would look elsewhere.
Whilst it is good that people wish to run their own businesses, if they wish to trade in the UK it is incumbent upon them to learn the laws of this land and understand what is and is not valid currency.
