Cheap booze sets poor example

9:42am Monday 7th April 2008

I FEEL I really must make public my protestation against the obvious 'pushing' of alcohol in one of the biggest supermarkets in Redditch.

The moment we walk through the main entrance we're faced with a continuous stream of cheap wine and other alcohol products on display.

I also find it disturbing that the supermarket has so many aisles dedicated to the display of cheap spirits and alco-pops.

Children bear witness to their parents piling up cheap booze, a poor example surely!

Sadly, we are becoming a nation of binge drinkers and what makes the whole marketing campaign used by supermarkets more repellent is that fact that our children are being blatantly exposed to it so as though it's quite the 'norm' to sell such a socially corrosive substance like alcohol.

It is surely a sad testament to our society to think that a 'glass of wine to chill out' is the core reward to people who reckon they have had a tough day, and view the alcohol as reward.

I have a better idea; they should come home, hug their kids, knowing that as a parent they'll be around in 20 years without liver disease to enjoy their grandchildren.
