9:44am Saturday 19th July 2008

Police are appealing for witnesses after a 26-year-old man was assaulted as he walked through the town centre with his girlfriend.

The incident happened between midnight and 1am on Saturday, July 12 along Alcester Street.

The man and his girlfriend had just entered the subway when two males approached them.

One of the males asked the man if he'd got a spare cigarette and then assaulted him before both made off in the direction of Smallwood.

The victim had slight injuries to his face and jaw but did not require hospital treatment.
