Inkberrow WI
ON St George's Day in Merrie England, Inkberrow was host to Lenchton/ Redditch/ Saltway Group of WI's, offering a warm welcome and the opportunity to share information on activities and outings in the year of Worcestershire's 90th birthday celebrations.
Members, wearing red, white and blue, gave a rousing welcome to Sir Robert', knight of the realm, and Squire Simon', visiting from Warwick Castle, who explained that St George's origins were actually somewhere in the Middle East: he became a soldier in the Roman army, was said to have earned the displeasure of the Emperor for his support of Christians, and was killed.
Having stood in crusades for the protection of the weak and helpless, he was adopted for his chivalry as England's patron saint in the 15th century.
Squire Simon helped Sir Robert to don his armour (with a little difficulty after "a few too many banquets") and we heard fascinating facts and figures about 15th century armour and the battlefield itself, as well as the origins of many modern sayings, such as "highly strung" (the arrow ready to shoot), "keeping under my hat" (the spare string for a bow), "keeping tabs on" (leather strips or gloves to protect archers' hands).
After very traditional refreshments of local sausages and apple tart, members heard an entertaining monologue on George and The Dragon before going their separate ways.
