DUNCAN Coombs from Pershore College was a most welcome speaker at the April meeting.
He has visited the society before when he gave a most informed talk on climbing plants, an evening well remembered for the quality of his photography and the range of plants he brought with him.
On Monday, April 21 his chosen topic was Plants for Shady Areas Most members of his audience could relate to this topic, but Duncan soon demonstrated that what were regarded as dificult areas, in fact gave many opportunities for planting.
Using a range of slides he illustrated different problems, and their different planting solutions, progressing from the shrubs for underplanting trees, to the herbacious plants.
He stressed the importance of dappled shade provided by the less dense deciduous trees.
Some of his planting suggestions were well-known solutions, but many were unusual suggestions, and the plants he had brought with him excited quite an interest.
The next meeting, on May 19, will be an evening for plant swopping, when members bring along their seedlings and cuttings to exchange for others.
On June 16 in the evening it is hoped that members will visit Hanbury Hall.
On Sunday, July 13 the society's outing is to Powis Castle. Information on any of these events can be obtained from 01527 404813.
