Alcester Gardening Club
THE speaker at the April meeting was Kim Hurst who, with her husband Rob are proprietors of the Cottage Herbery, a nursery near Tenbury Wells.
They specialise in cottage garden plants, herbs, native plants and unusual edibles.
All their plants are grown in peat-free compost and they have been growing organically for 32 years, long before it became fashionable. The nursery trades online and is not open to the public as a rule.
The Hursts do many shows including Malvern, Shrewsbury, Gardeners' World Live, and of course Chelsea.
In their long careers they have won many prizes and a few of the covetted golds including one at Chelsea. Their slides were mainly of their show displays and were very interesting.
The people that the show circuit has brought them into contact with are many, including many celebrities. It was an interesting and entertaining evening with excellent plants on sale.
The next meeting of the year will be on Thursday, May 1 at 7.30pm at the Jubilee Court Centre, St Faith's Road.
The speaker will be Duncan Straw and his subject will be Unusual Perennials.
The next trip is an evening one on Wednesday, June 18 to Hill Close Gardens at Warwick.
The price is £6 per head to include a guided tour and refreshments.
All members and guests will be welcome. Membership is still at £10 per year and guests are welcome at £2.50 a meeting.
Any queries and the 2008 programme are available from the secretary on 01789 765105.
