Wythall WI
JOSIE Morgan acted as president for the April meeting as Anne Laugharne was on holiday.
She welcomed all visitors particularly Sheila Martin, a previous member, who has moved away from the area.
Letters and notices gave updates on many future activities within the group and thank you cards were read from members who are unable to attend meetings at present due to illness.
The guest speakers for the evening were trustees from the charity LUCIA (Life uplifted by change in Africa) lead by Sylvia Gardiner. Sylvia's son had obtained a position working for the UN in Ethiopia and on visiting him she had been so disturbed by the poverty and the life being lead by the women and children that she returned home determined to try and help.
She felt that the problems in Ethiopia had probably originated from the famine of the 1980s leaving the country relying on Western Aid and that the population had lost its skills.
With the help of friends she has raised some considerable funds and is working with other African associations to encourage sustainable development and self help thus helping the women to become independent.
Projects to include the building of kindergarten classrooms, play areas and support for small business enterprises. The vote of thanks was given by Sue Russell and the raffle won by Jean Kenny.
