Probus Club of Alcester

THE club met on Wednesday, February 27 at our usual venue - the Hollybush Hotel - and after lunch we were entertained by Roger Gowland.

Roger spent 41 years of his life as a teacher and headmaster and therefore was able to tell us of many of the experiences of his career.

At one time he taught at a primary school in Dudley and gave us a perfect resume of a conversation between two Black Country children - totally unrecognisable as English!

Before retiring, Roger spent 17 years as headmaster of Temple Grafton School during which he suffered and overcame various trails and policy changes inflicted by the government on the teaching profession.

His was a most interesting and entertaining talk which was much appreciated by all.

On Wednesday, March 26 our speaker was jo-Ann Gloger from Forge Mill Museum in redditch.

Again, a most interesting talk about the needle industry in Redditch, illustrated with a slide presentation.

The conditions in which people worked from a very early age until retirement (should they survive until old age due to the many dangerous procedures that had to be endured to produce first quality needles) were awe inspiring, there being no health and safety at work rules then.

We were told that 90 per cent of the world's needles were made in Redditch and local areas but now they come from Czechoslovakia!

It is obvious that a visit to the museum would be most interesting to experience to some degree the conditions and methods of those years ago.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 23 at 12.15pm for 12.45pm. The above gives some idea of the interesting talks we have each month.

Anyone who would like to join us should contact the secretary on 01789 766217.
