Road closed over spilled milk
10:58am Thursday 18th October 2012 in Local
ICKNIELD Street Drive in Redditch was closed off for an hour, this morning at the height of rush hour, after a collision between a car and a lorry outside the Morrisons supermarket at the junction with Clearwell Road..
The incident occurred at approximately 7am on Thursday, October 18, when a Vauxhall Insignia was in collision with a small three-tonne milk lorry.
The driver of the car was taken by ambulance to the Alexandra Hospital, suffering from lower back pain, while the driver of the milk lorry was trapped inside his vehicle, and had to be freed by fire crews using heavy cutting equipment, before he could be taken to the Alexandra Hospital. He suffered serious shoulder injuries.
Bob Morris, watch commander at Redditch Fire Station, attended the scene.
He said: “We also dealt with the environmental side of it. Milk and orange juice are the worst two substances to enter a water course they deoxygenate water, so we had to block all the drains off and add dry sand.”
Group commander Mick Cadman from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, added: “This was a serious collision and crews worked well with paramedics to ensure the casualty received the medical attention he needed. They also managed to cover the drains and avert the environmental impact of a large quantity of milk entering the water course.”
