A REDDITCH and Alcester charity worker is raising a laugh and raising money at the same time, as part of a new campaign by Cancer Research UK.

Sue Medcalf, who works as an area volunteer manager for the charity in Redditch and Alcester, got involved with the ‘Stand Up to Cancer’ campaign, which is showing on Channel 4 this week, culminating in a live fundraising event on Friday, October 19.

Together with several colleagues, and award-winning hairstylist Sarah Russell, she made sure the group’s hair stood on end, hopefully raising a few laughs, and some much needed cash for the charity.

She said: “Making your hair stand on end is just one of the fun ways to join the fight and Stand Up To Cancer. Why not encourage family, friends and work mates to get involved and go head-to head to see who can create the most outrageous hair-do?

“We are calling on men, women and children across the region to Stand Up To Cancer by helping us raise money for vital research.”

People wanting to take part in the campaign, can organise their own fundraising event, or visit their local Cancer Research UK shop, where they can buy a range of ‘Stand Up To Cancer’ t-shirts and hoodies, as well as watches in bold colours, pin badges, key rings and travel mugs.

They can also buy a ‘Stand Up To Cancer’ wristband for £1 from Cancer Research UK, Tesco and TK Maxx stores.

Cancer Research UK’s West Midlands spokeswoman, Paula Young added: “We are calling on everyone in the region to unite with people across the UK and stand up to this devastating disease.

“We are entering a ‘golden age’ of cancer research and every pound we raise takes us a step closer to achieving our goal to beat this disease. By boosting funding right now, the best research teams will be able to develop new treatments, bring cures faster and save more lives.”
