New running course to start in Redditch
4:00pm Saturday 15th September 2012 in Local
A NEW free running programme to help wannabe runners ditch the couch is coming to Redditch from this month, hot on the heels of the success of parkrun.
On the back of successfully launching free, weekly, 5km timed parkruns, a new 'Couch to 5k' running programme specially designed by the NHS is now being rolled out by Redditch Council and is free thanks to sponsorship from Sainsbury's.
Couch to 5k uses the latest technology to motivate anyone who wants to have a go, supported by a series of downloadable podcasts which are designed to structure a run with running music and coaching to develop running technique, speed and stamina progressively over time.
Set for Saturday mornings at 11am at the Countryside Centre on Arrow Valley Lake, a professional running instructor will start Couch to 5k from Saturday, September 22.
The Couch to 5k podcasts are available at no cost direct from nhs.uk or via iTunes.
Couch to 5k aims to have runners comfortably running five kilometres within nine weeks, and graduates of the course will be signposted to local running groups, including parkrun, so they can choose to continue their healthier lifestyle.
