YOUNGSTERS in Redditch are being given the chance to get fit and healthy thanks to a special grant.
Councillor Juliet Brunner has given £1,000 to each of the five first schools in her division for games and playground equipment to encourage pupils to get healthy.
The schools receiving the cash include Abbeywood First, Moons Moat First, Roman Way First, Tenacres First and Matchborough First schools.
Mrs Brunner said: "It's so important to get children active and the games equipment means they can exercise in a fun way.
“Getting them interested in physical activity during their primary school years will hopefully set them on the right course for life."
The money comes from Worcestershire County Council's community leadership for health fund, set up to improve the health of residents.
Mrs Brunner has already used some of her allocation from the fund to provide Nintendo Wii consoles to a number of schools.
John Smith OBE, the county council’s cabinet member for health improvement, said: “It’s good to see the work that councillors have been doing with groups and organisations to encourage and promote healthier lifestyles, for both young and old.”
