Redditch resident's parking fury

IN the last six months a Redditch resident has been given 17 penalty charge notices just for parking outside his own house.

Azijur Rahman, who lives with his wife and son in Mount Pleasant, started to experience problems about six months ago when Redditch Council took over the parking enforcement from West Mercia Police.

He said that since then he has been unable to park outside his house for more than 20 minutes without receiving a fine.

“I’ve lived in this street for almost 20 years and never had a problem with parking,” he said.

“Now, all of a sudden I’m not able to park outside my own home which is ridiculous - and if I do, I get fined for it.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. There is no room to park anywhere else and if there is, then it is too far away.

He added: “As a result I’ve been given 17 fines which I’m refusing to pay because it’s just not right.

“And it’s not only me, all my neighbours are in the same position. We’ve tried to go to the council to get some answers and to try and make sense of it but every time we do, we get ignored.”

A council spokesman said: “The Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) covering Mount Pleasant is not new. It has been in existence for some time and was made by Worcestershire County Council, the highway authority.

“Redditch Council must enforce any existing TROs. If a driver overstays the permitted time in a designated parking area, we have to issue a penalty charge notice.

“A residents’ parking scheme does not operate on this street. This would allow residents with permits to park on the highway, though would not guarantee them a space.

“Anyone who feels there should be one in their area can contact their local county councillor.”

That's alot of money Azijur might owe if he's been parking illegally for 20 years! Sorry mate - pay up, or do you illegally park anywhere else and expect to get away with it?
Doesn't sound like the Council ignored you this time.
