A REDDITCH chippy is hoping to fish another gong at a national awards show this month.

The Golden Carp Chippy, on Matchborough Way, is one of 10 competing to be named the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year at the Royal Lancaster in London on Thursday, January 25.

The accolade is one of 15 categories that make up the The National Fish and Chip Awards, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Marcus Coleman, chief executive of organisers Seafish, said: “We’ve always known that Britain has a special place in its heart for fish and chips – they’re a national institution.

“Flaky, piping hot succulent fish covered in crispy batter with golden chips – it’s a duo that’s captured the hearts of the British public since the early 19th century.

“As we mark 30 years, I’m pleased to say that the awards still have the same goal since the competition started – to celebrate the great British tradition of fish and chips by recognising the best talent, quality and choice whilst striving to raise the standards of the industry to ensure it thrives for generations to come.”

Theo Ellinas, owner of The Golden Carp Chippy, said: “It’s a great feeling to be shortlisted in the top 10.

"The team have put in so much hard work, and together we have improved our shop beyond expectations.

“To receive recognition for all of our hard work, by a panel of experts who understand the industry, is the cherry on top of the cake.”

The Redditch chippy was named in the shortlist for the Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year category last year.

It also won acclaim when it was recognised with the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) Fish & Chip Quality Award last year.
