UP to £1M investment to improve CCTV equipment has been pledged by West Mercia's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC).

John Campion has promised up to £65,000 per year will be given to the five Community Safety Partnerships (CSPs) across West Mercia for new and improved equipment until March 2020.

The news comes after calls for more vigilance on CCTV cameras.

The CSPs are being asked to work with their local policing teams and communities to ensure there is a more joined-up approach.

They will each submit an application detailing the areas of need and where they believe the cameras should be placed, or which cameras need to be upgraded.

Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said: "I recognise that CCTV is an extremely valuable resource.

"Not only can the presence of a camera make people feel more secure, but by improving the cameras, and updating the equipment, it will ensure better quality of images which will assist the police and call handlers in the call centre.

"It is also about partnership working to ensure that the funding is being spent in the areas of highest need."
