TO many the story of the Three Little Pigs is merely a fairy tale but for a group of students from a Redditch first school it was a learning curve.

Youngsters from Woodrow First School recently visited the Heart of Worcestershire (HOW) College where the fable was brought to life through the theme of construction.

Children were asked to consider what type of career the wolf might have had, and after highlighting the building and demolition of houses as a key part of the story, the youngsters decided on construction.

But during their visit, there was no time for huffing, puffing and blowing down houses as the children were shown a range of practical skills with help from college staff and students.

They learnt about plastering, insulation, bricklaying and joinery, and were able to take part in activities including laying bricks and creating a plaster mould to take home.

Year 1 class teacher Yasmin Sleem said: "At Woodrow we are constantly seeking experiences for the children that help them develop aspirations for their future as adults.

"Our story allows us to explore the role of a builder when demolishing and re-building a range of house.”

Rob Smith, curriculum resources in quality leader for construction at HOW College Redditch, said: "The last two weeks have been a very uplifting, enjoyable and worthwhile experience especially with it helping the children’s story come to life.

"They all thoroughly enjoyed getting actively involved in becoming a 'builder for the day' turning their hand to a range of activities such as laying bricks, mixing mortar, seeing how houses are built and making plaster moulds.

"Everyone had immense fun along the way including the support team who also got involved with the activities. Our students that have helped over the two sessions have been inspirational in sharing with the children all the knowledge and skills they have learnt on their respective courses."
