MP Karen Lumley is to host mental health summit in Redditch next Friday (January 20).

The news follows an announcement yesterday (Monday) by Prime Minister Theresa May that the Government intends to transform attitudes to mental health, with a focus on children and young people.

Additional training for teachers, an extra £15 million for community care, and improved support in the workplace were among measures announced by the PM.

Mrs Lumley said: "Mental health is a passion of mine and I would like to think I am ahead of the game as the summit I have arranged in Redditch has been organised since last autumn.

"One in four people has a mental disorder at some point in their life and figures show young people are affected disproportionately with over half of mental health problems starting by the age of 14 and 75 per cent by 18."

The seminar, which Karen organised following concerns for mental health provision in Worcestershire, will involve local stakeholders including NHS England, Redditch & Bromsgrove Clinical Commissioning Group, Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust, Redditch Borough Council, West Mercia Police and others.

Mrs Lumley added: "The Prime Minister said that mental health had been dangerously disregarded as secondary to physical health – and I agree. I am looking forward to exploring and highlighting mental health issues in the area and am glad the Government is in tune with what I am doing here."
