KIND-HEARTED Redditch Lions have raised more than £200 to help fund lifesaving equipment for people in Haiti devastated by Hurricane Matthew.

The club held at fundraiser at the Kingfisher Shopping Centre on Wednesday, October 19, and generous shoppers donated the cash in just five hours.

The money will go to the Lions International Disaster Fund Appeal to fund life-saving jerrycans that can filter 10,000 to 20,000 litres of water.

Just one can will provide water for four people for more than three years. The process of filtering takes around 20 seconds then 0.70 litres of water can be drunk immediately.

It does not need chemicals as it uses carbon technology that filters out viruses and bacteria.

Redditch Lions publicity and community activities officer Brian Rich said: "Although it happened less that three weeks ago, the disaster wreaked on Haiti by Hurricane Matthew has almost vanished from the news.

"However for the victims, a supply of clean fresh water is almost impossible to obtain and they are in urgent need of help."

"On Wednesday Club members raised over £200 in just five hours from generous shoppers," he added.
