PROPOSALS to tear down and replace a Redditch school have been given the go-head by committee members at Worcestershire County Council.

The proposal would see a new two-form entry first school (nursery, reception classes, plus years 1 to 4), for Holyoakes Field First School.

The proposal would replace and provide a new home for the existing school, as well as an additional capacity of 300 pupils (excluding nursery) for the surrounding area, including the developing Brockhill East housing estate.

Councillor Marc Bayliss, cabinet member with responsibility for Children and Families said the move is excellent news for local families.

"With new housing developments progressing well, the demand for school places in Worcestershire is greater than ever, and it is hugely important that we meet this demand," he said.

Councillor Rob Adams, chairman of the planning and regulatory committee said he was pleased to approve the application, subject to a number of conditions set out in the agenda papers.

"The committee is satisfied that this is sustainable development and shows great consideration for minimising any impact on the local environment," he said.

"The sustainable drainage and Sedum roofs are particularly encouraging, as these greatly reduce the risk of localised flooding issues that arise from new developments."

As the proposal is located within the Green Belt, the county council must consult Bromsgrove MP and Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Sajid Javid.

The council may not grant planning permission until the Secretary of State has notified the council that he does not intend to call in the application for his own determination.
