THE flag at Redditch Town Hall has been lowered to half mast and a special tribute will take place in the town centre following the terror attack in Nice.

At least 84 people, including many children, have died after a terrorist drove a truck through crowds celebrating Bastille Day in Nice yesterday.

Eyewitnesses said the killer swerved from side to side to kill as many people as possible as he drove for hundreds of metres along the Promenade des Anglais on the seafront of the city in the south of France.

At first horrified onlookers assumed the driver had lost control.

But one witness said he then produced a gun before being shot by police.

As sun rose on Friday morning, the lorry could still be seen where it finally came to a halt, its windscreen peppered with bullet holes.

Leader of Redditch Council Bill Hartnett said: "We have written to our French twin towns expressing deepest sympathy.

"It is a tragedy.

"Terrorists can not, and will not win. We must and will stand up united against these horrific acts.

He added: "My thoughts and prayers are with the French people."

The West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner John-Paul Campion tweeted: "Incredibly sad news coming from #Nice #France overnight - thoughts and prayers with the victims and their families."

A special tribute has been arranged for 12.30pm tomorrow at Redditch Band Stand in the town centre involving singers and musical acts.

All are welcome.
