FRIENDS and family of Finlay Church, the Alvechurch boy who smashed the Guinness World Record for having the most teddy bears in a row and raised more than £100,000 for charity before he died from a brain tumour, are hoping to break another Guinness World Record in his memory.

They are aiming to smash the world record for the longest line of hats, which currently stands at 1,000.

Residents are being urged to donate unwanted hats and attend the world record attempt at Alvechurch CE Middle School, which is being held on Finlay's 12th birthday, Friday, May 20.

Speaking on the Finlay's Journey Facebook page, his mum Penny said: "We want to honour him in some way on this day and so we have decided to try and break another world record.

"The kids will be laying hats by class during the afternoon but we are hoping people will be able to join us from 3.30 onwards to bring more, lay some themselves or just witness loads of the Alvechurch community on their knees again doing something bonkers to raise money and awareness and hopefully give our angel in the sky something to laugh about on the day he should turn 12."

They aim line up at least 2,000 hats and the record will be in the name of Finlay's friends so all those that participate can be a recognised.

There is a minimum £1 donation to participate, with all funds going to Brain Tumour Research.

The event, which is being held from 3.30pm to 5.30pm, will include games, refreshments, bouncy castle, a barbecue and a cake stand.

After the event, all hats will be given to Socks and Chocs, a charity providing essential items for homeless people.

Finlay, who passed away after a 17 month cancer battle on November 25, was crowned Child of Courage at the Pride of Birmingham Awards 2015.

Hats can be dropped off at the school or at 25 Birmingham Road (porch area).
