SCALEXTRIC enthusiasts are being invited to a three-day event in aid of St Nicholas’ Church.

A 21-meter track will be constructed inside the church, in Butter Street, offering fans of the electric car racing game the chance to compete for a selection of prizes.

There will be eight two hour sessions running between Thursday, February 18 and Saturday, February 20.

An urgent appeal to restore St Nicholas’ Church was launched after an architect found stonework on all four external walls and its tower were in need of restoration, costing at least £200,000.

Chairman of the restoration fund committee Mike Newey, who is organising the event, said: "The track has bridges and some sharp corners – they’re going to have quite a challenge.

"I am looking forward to it - we hope to raise a lot of money."

So far about £20,000 has been raised towards the refurbishment costs and the restoration fund committee are currently liaising with English Heritage in the hopes of securing further financial aid.

Places for adults cost £10, under 15s cost £5 and family groups of four cost £25.
