MATCHBOROUGH Scouts held their first ever Redditch District Cub Chess Competition followed by a boxing themed movie night.

The double event, which was described as similar to the hybrid fighting sport chessboxing, was held recently at the Matchborough Scout Headquarters in Green Sward Lane.

Cubs from across the town competed in group stages then onto knockout style matches with Oliver Leck from 11th Redditch Scout Group winning the overall competition.

Later the room was set up for a movie night dedicated to Rocky Balboa.

Assistant cub scout leader Harry Sargent said: "The scout group are always looking for different ways to engage and raise funds and a screening of the first two Rocky films seemed appropriate with the release of Creed next week."

“Well it wasn't quite chessboxing but a great chess tournament evolved and a movie night revolving round boxing made Matchborough Scout Headquarters a hive of activity for the day.”

Organisers will now look make the competition a regular part of the Redditch Cub Scout calendar.
