A TEAM of Redditch stylists proved they really are a cut above the rest by completing a 24-hour hairdressing marathon, to help a young boy suffering from a debilitating condition.

Toni & Guy, on Evesham Walk in the Kingfisher Centre, raised more than £500 which will go toward providing specialist care for 11-year-old Maxwell McKnight who suffers from spinal muscular atrophy type 2.

The rare genetic condition causes muscle weakness, respiratory problems and nutritional complications with some sufferers’ lives shortened.

Steve Hurley, who has styled British singer and songwriter Rita Ora’s hair, was snipping hair throughout the event with help from his team.

He said: "It was a long and tiring day but we raised over £500 for our chosen charity. It was a fantastic day and I am very proud to have taken part with the help of one of our team members Georgie Newman who was assisting myself throughout the entire 24 hours."

He decided to do the challenge after after reading Maxwell’s story.

Spinal muscular atrophy affects approximately 1 in 6,000 babies with 1 in 40 people being genetic carriers for the condition.
